Kiefer Sutherland's Bedazzled Backpack -- Most Unexpected Sentence Ever!

"Monster's Vs. Aliens" rocked the box office this weekend, taking in more money than any movie opening this year. One of the actors we all need to thank for pulling us out of the econo-port-a-potty is Jack Bauer. I mean, Kiefer Sutherland. No, I mean Jack Bauer!

Turns out, one of the reasons Kiefer signed on to voice Gen. W.R. Monger in the 3-D animated comedy was "the idea that you can tell children it's all right to be different."

By different he means he had a bedazzled backpack as a kid ... no I am freakin' serious! He told the Toronto Sun, "Levi's had a backpack that was like a Levi's pocket. It was the most coveted thing and my mom had no money. I got mine a year late. Do you know what a Bedazzler is? It's a rhinestone gun. My mother was a great product of the '60s and somehow I had gotten this backpack. Between when I went to bed, and I was so excited about taking this to school, my mother had bedazzled it to hell with my name in rhinestones."

Did lil' Bauer load up his fake spy gear in his new sparkle bag and hit the playground? Nope. Instead, he did what most of us would have done. "I had to bury that backpack on my way to school every day for like two years. I finally told her that someone stole it. This desire to fit in is just unrelenting for children. The idea of being able to tell them 'you're all right' no matter what anybody else says, just you as you are, you're all right. I love that idea. I can't tell you how much that resonated with me."

Through the countless tics-tocs of each episode of "24," I've learned a lot from Mr. Sutherland. Not only am I educated in the world of treason, espionage and yelling really loud, but now I feel a little bit more connected to the man behind the pistol whipping.

I think we should have a national Jack Bauer day, brought to us by the Bedazzler and yellow digital clocks.

Sutherland vs. Monsters and Aliens

He's the star and mainstay of 24, a groundbreaking television series.

Furthermore, despite the gruelling demands of portraying Jack Bauer on the small screen, he still finds time for other acting opportunities - most recently in supplying the rasping voice of a jingoistic American general in the animated Monsters vs. Aliens.

But if you tell Kiefer Sutherland that he has it made, you're in for an argument. This most personable of Canadian actors believes in tough self-analysis. Forget those acting awards and the international stardom and the million-dollar pay cheques. He still believes he's capable of more.

"I still feel at the age of 42 that I haven't made the film I want to make. I still feel there is so much to do."

He reminds you of the many bumps along the way, both professionally and personally, since he first attracted attention in the 1984 Canadian film, The Bay Boy.

"It's up and down," he says matter-of-factly. "That's exactly what it has been. I started up and managed to do films like Stand By Me, Lost Boys and Flatliners - things that took off very well. Then there was a bit of a lull, and then I got to do things like A Few Good Men and Dark City. It has gone up and down."

But he never stopped working.

"Work breeds work in our business, and it still does," he says. "But there were huge disappointments."

On March 27, 2009, DreamWorks Animation will releasing another computer-animated 3-D feature film titled "Monsters vs. Aliens". For sure, it's absolutely not an animated version of "Alien Vs. Predator," but this will be the first computer animated movie which will be produced in real 3-D instead of converting the film into 3-D after it is finished, about America that's being invaded by aliens, and the government’s answer with unleashing the monsters."Monsters vs. Aliens" is starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson with Stephen Colbert and Kiefer Sutherland. The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound. The world learns that the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (voiced by Hugh Laurie); the macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link (voiced by Will Arnett); the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (voiced by Seth Rogen); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus.
