Kiefer Sutherland's Return To Television Gets Cautious Praise

Kiefer Sutherland can't have felt anything but pressure as his first major TV role since 10 phenomenal years spent on '24' aired for the first time last night (26 January 2012).
Fans and critics were certainly eager to see how the Canadian actor was going to follow up what has come to be known as one of the iconic TV characters of the 21st century in secret agent Jack Bauer.
'Touch,' which sees Sutherland playing a single father of a mute son who sees things other cannot, aired last night for the first time - and the answer to whether he's managed to follow up what may be career defining role successfully?
A cautious yes, according to the critics.
Newsday was effusive in its praise, saying the program was "A bit melodramatic, a bit manipulative, Touch is still one of the best pilots of the 2011-12 season to date," and others were similar praiseworthy though understandably a little more cautious given it was the pilot episode.
"It's Mr. Sutherland's portrayal of the father--unyielding in his effort to break through to his mute child and grasp what he's trying to say with his numbers--that is the heart of this story, the power likely to sustain this promising enterprise," said the Wall Street Journal, whilst
TV Guide said "[Touch is] emotionally compelling but wildly fantastical and undeniably manipulative."Not all were enthused though, The New York Times commented "The 11-year-old boy at the center of the story has never spoken and is also the show's narrator.
It's a perfectly acceptable device, if not a particularly interesting one in this case," whilst the Los Angeles Times weren't fans at all, stating "Ironically, given a show that so clearly wants to touch its audience--from that weighty one-word title on down--we have met, apart from Martin, hardly a single character who incorporates more than the hint of an actual person.

Comic-Con Backstage: Kiefer Sutherland discusses the possible end of '24'

Jack Bauer will return for another Day of "24" starting next January on FOX. That means that once again, Jack has cheated death. Even if we establish, though, that Jack Bauer is essentially a television immortal, time may still be running out for Kiefer Sutherland's gun-toting alter-ego.

"I don't know with regards to 'The Last Season' or anything," Sutherland told reporters backstage after the "24" Comic-Con panel on Friday (July 24). "I really don't. It is the last season that I've been contracted to do '24,' but I really don't know. We're so focused on making Season Eight. But obviously the requirements would be that the writers felt that they could really bang it out. If Howard [Gordon] came to me and say, 'The way I saw those last scenes play, I have an idea for Season Nine that would be unbelievable,' I would have to listen to him for that. I think we're all very away of wanting to protect what we believe is a very strong and important legacy that is '24.' All of those things. Again, the choices to do or not to do it have nothing to do with my contract, have everything to do with whether or not an audience still wants to watch it and cares and whether or not we feel we have something to offer."

"My sense, and I think today kind of confirms it, I think fans kinda root for Jack and I think I kinda root for him as well and I think people would like to see him at least have the option to have a good life," Sutherland said. "We've stripped a lot of those components away over the years, by virtue of killing everybody, that whether he wants to live or die seemed to become kind of innocuous, like 'Who cares?' There was nothing really to live for. So what we did for this season is to really try to create something that would make Jack want to live. We started off with just this relationship between he and his daughter and his granddaughter and her husband and that family, because his family was literally torn apart after Season One."

Sutherland added, "For me as an actor and Jack as a character, the desire for Season Eight is to protect all of the things that would make living worthwhile and also live within the context of what he morally accept himself doing or not doing."

How will Sutherland react to the end of his run as Jack Bauer, whether it comes after next season or several years down the road?

"I think it's gonna be very complicated," he said." Whether this is our last season or next season's our last season, we certainly know we're on the shorter end of the stick than the longer one."

He continued, "In Season One and Season Two, it's such a shock to your body, the workload, that you can't wait for it to be done. And somewhere and somehow in the groove of everything, you start to get into a rhythm of it and you find ways to make it easier for yourself... I know for a fact that it's not gonna be 'Wahoo!' It's gonna be a combination of a lot of things and it's not gonna be easy."

Who wants to be a foreign leader on '24?'

The opening of 24's eighth season centers on a U.N. peace conference where President Taylor (Cherry Jones) and the president of Iran (Anil Kapoor, best known to U.S. viewers as the game-show host in Slumdog Millionaire) have prominent roles.

At a Comic-Con presentation, Kiefer Sutherland, who plays super agent Jack Bauer, said the plot is not unrealistic.
"This season is more grounded in what possibly could happen. There's a sense of reality that almost brings it back to Season 1," said Sutherland, who added that serious planning on a 24 film wouldn't start until the series approaches its end.

The peace conference is a noble goal, Sutherland said, but "when opportunities present themselves, there are also threats."

That threat would be a possible assassination attempt against the Iranian president, which of course draws a "retired" Jack Bauer in.

A short clip revealed that CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) back after having been disbanded and it's a much glitzier place, all chrome and glass and cool lights.
When we last left Jack, he was on the verge of dying from an airborne toxin, his only chance at survival reviving the help of his daughter Kim.

"He did make it through. You'll see a little later how," executive producer Howard Gordon said.
Whatever happened worked well, because Jack will show a new feeling: happiness, largely due to being with his daughter and granddaughter, executive producer Manny Coto said.

Besides Kapoor, Freddie Prinze Jr. joins the cast as CTU agent and ex-Marine Cole Ortiz and Katee Sackhoff plays his fiancee, Dana Walsh, a CTU data analyst. Mary Lynn Rajskub is back as cranky, brilliant Chloe, although she's a bit behind the learning curve because she's been away taking care of her son. After a few episodes, Sackhoff, a veteran of Battlestar Galactica battles, said she told the writers she needed a gun. "I was starting to feel naked," she said.

The clip showed an injured man telling Jack of a possible assassination plot and Prinze, Sackhoff and Rajskub in the dark and shiny CTU.

After the clip, Sutherland offered solace to any worried fans. "Don’t be alarmed. We do still blow shit up."

Deb's Trip to Niagara Falls

Only a picture of me and Kiefer Sutherland would have made this trip complete. The other guys will have to do.

Kiefer Sutherland Life Mask

I went to the wax museum in Niagara Falls, Ontario today and took this picture of Kiefer's life mask. I was hoping for a full sized Jack Bauer made of wax but no such luck.

Kiefer to Make Appearance in Support of Canada Day - July 1

"REAL" MOLSON BEER, THE CAST OF 24, LUC ROBITAILLE AND IT'S A PARTY L.A. is Vancouver's sister city so the Canadian Consulate here is hosting a huge shindig for Canada Day this Tuesday evening in Hancock Park with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics as the theme.

Molson is sending the beer -- the real stuff, not the watery American-made version, thank you very much -- and the Hudson Bay Company is providing the gift baskets. Mingling with the invited Canadian born guests -- hockey greats Luc Robitaille and Wayne Gretzky, 24 producer John Cassar and actors Kiefer Sutherland and Elisha Cuthbert; stars Rachel McAdams, Jim Carrey, Mike Meyers, Howie Mandel, Matthew Perry and Leslie Nielsen -- will be the official Olympic mascots, Quatchi, Sumi, Miga and Muk Muk.

A staffer at the consulate said many American businessmen and politicians, such as L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are also expected. The bi-country party is to encourage more cross-border economic trade. "We do have to constantly remind our friends to the south that Canada is NOT the 51st state," the staffer half-joked.

I'm betting one taste of real beer and that'll be a done deal.

PRIME TIME TV ads from Tourism Canada featuring 20-second "real footage" vignettes of tourists coming across seals while kayaking or watching glaciers melt into the ocean are proving to be mighty popular with the already heatstricken Los Angelenos. "I'm sold," said Kim Torres, a local executive recruiter with two teenagers who admits she's always wanted to go to Canada. But the refreshing, quirky ads made up her mind for this year. "No kidding, we're booked for end of July, a week in Montreal, then to Halifax and fishing off Cape Breton Island. I really, really hope it's 140 degrees while we're away."

Top 5 TV Dads

In honor of Father's Day on Sunday here is a list of the Top 5 TV Dads. There was no criteria for this list as all of the contenders made the list for different reasons.
And here we...go:
#1. JACK BAUER- 24
Of the all time total bad A** dads, Jack Bauer takes the cake, beats the hell out of it, gets every piece of vital information out of it and then makes sure it knows who it crossed before he ever lets anyone have a piece. Seriously, if you had a problem and needed help getting out of a jam, who better to go to than the former Counter Terrorism Unit leader?
Since 24 began in 2001, we have seen what has to be at least seven of the worst days of this guys life. He's been betrayed, shot, stabbed, kidnapped and tortured by rogue Chinese government officials, shot some more and has died at least three times. Does it ever stop him?
Of course then again, he was never home and he did get his wife killed and I'm sure Kim lived in fear every day that she was going to be kidnapped because of whatever here dad was into that day...or at least mauled by a cougar. But she did repay him by donating stem cells to save him from the radiation he was exposed to last season, so Happy Father's Day, Jack Bauer!!

Back to Work on 24

Didn’t the last season just end? Kiefer Sutherland, Elisha Cuthbert, and Paul Wesley and were spotted on set in downtown Los Angeles today.
How cute does Kiefer look with his little friend there? She’s totally stealing the show. She and her tiny polar bear. It’s not a tree Kiefer, it’s ok. She’s harmless!
