Kiefer Sutherland has announced the current season of 24 will be the last.
There have been constant reports the hit American drama series is coming to an end in recent weeks. Kiefer has now confirmed the eighth season will be the final one, revealing he took the decision along with executive producer and showrunner Howard Gordon, Twentieth Century Fox Television, Imagine Entertainment and Fox Broadcasting Company.
“This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible," Kiefer said. “While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted 24 to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon.”
The star added the end of the show doesn’t necessarily mean the end of tough anti-terrorist agent Jack Bauer, and action hero he portrays. Producers are working on a film version of the programme, something Kiefer is looking forward to.
While the series is shown in real time, with 24 episodes each depicting one hour of a day, a film version would not be. Kiefer explained that means the action will move around more, with characters able to travel to other countries.
“We felt strongly that there has been a demand and an interest in a 24 film, which would be a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day, so we felt it was time to move in that direction,” he explained. “In a two-hour (movie) representation of the 24 world, planes, trains, and automobiles all of a sudden become a factor because you are not required to go scene by scene in real time. That’s something I can say I am very excited about.”
The season finale of 24 airs on American station FOX on Monday May 24.
