It’s somehow disappointing to enter a swanky hotel room in London’s Covent Garden and find all-action, gravel-voiced counter-terrorist operative Jack Bauer fighting a losing battle against… the common cold. When he got on the plane from LA, he says, he was fine. By the time he landed in London, he was host to all manner of winter germs.“I was born in this city and usually I’d take time out to go and have a curry or visit a pie shop. There’s one I always try and get to. But this time I feel so lousy I don’t know if I can do it,” he says.
Trim, thin-faced and pale, 42-year-old Kiefer Sutherland is today dressed in pressed jeans and a shirt and sweater combo that gives him the air of a junior banker on “Dress Down Friday”. He ignores the table of high-end snacks and reaches for a pack of Camel cigarettes instead.
“I’m getting through this on Sudafed and smokes,” he says in a low-register drawl. “It might not be the right way to do things but… it’s my way.”
