Kiefer Sutherland's Return To Television Gets Cautious Praise

Kiefer Sutherland can't have felt anything but pressure as his first major TV role since 10 phenomenal years spent on '24' aired for the first time last night (26 January 2012).
Fans and critics were certainly eager to see how the Canadian actor was going to follow up what has come to be known as one of the iconic TV characters of the 21st century in secret agent Jack Bauer.
'Touch,' which sees Sutherland playing a single father of a mute son who sees things other cannot, aired last night for the first time - and the answer to whether he's managed to follow up what may be career defining role successfully?
A cautious yes, according to the critics.
Newsday was effusive in its praise, saying the program was "A bit melodramatic, a bit manipulative, Touch is still one of the best pilots of the 2011-12 season to date," and others were similar praiseworthy though understandably a little more cautious given it was the pilot episode.
"It's Mr. Sutherland's portrayal of the father--unyielding in his effort to break through to his mute child and grasp what he's trying to say with his numbers--that is the heart of this story, the power likely to sustain this promising enterprise," said the Wall Street Journal, whilst
TV Guide said "[Touch is] emotionally compelling but wildly fantastical and undeniably manipulative."Not all were enthused though, The New York Times commented "The 11-year-old boy at the center of the story has never spoken and is also the show's narrator.
It's a perfectly acceptable device, if not a particularly interesting one in this case," whilst the Los Angeles Times weren't fans at all, stating "Ironically, given a show that so clearly wants to touch its audience--from that weighty one-word title on down--we have met, apart from Martin, hardly a single character who incorporates more than the hint of an actual person.

EXCLUSIVE: Kiefer Sutherland and his girlfriend leave the west village bar

Not very clear, but he looks pretty happy to me, and she has a nice smile for him ,too!

Kings Wood, tuesday night. The pair sat in a booth for hours talking, leaving at the morning an hour past normal closing time. Keifer opted to take a cold and sobering walk home with his girlfriend, they held hands the entire way laughing and talking.

Anonymous said...: Funny how they supposedly held hands when each and every photo shows her clinging on to him as usual and no hand holding whatsoever - bizarre reporting, and maybe spelling his name right would be a good start.

Anonymous said...: I agree, Sally-Ann, but "together" can mean a lot of things. I still think that a lot more is made of this relationship than what is actually the case. Considering the many women Kiefer has had in his life, I don't think anyone, including Siobhan, should assume that she is "The One" for Kiefer. I could be wrong, but I just feel that Kiefer really doesn't want to commit at this point in time to one woman. Hang out with each other, go out for dinner and or drinks, be seen here and there, yes...but that doesn't mean the relationship is serious. She never looks all that happy, and as for Kiefer, his expressions are often ambiguous. More often than not, he walks ahead of her. You're right, Sally-Ann...Kiefer can do better, but, maybe he doesn't think he deserves better. Bless his heart...I wish he wouldn't give himself away so easily.; March 5, 2009 at 6:25 PM
Anonymous said...: Ro, after those pictures and all those sightings in New York and even in Paris, i think it's more a love relationship than an occasionnal thing.
Even if he wants to be discreet about his personnal life, i don't understand why he told a fan he was single whereas he is not.
He lied to her, we all know they are together and so, i'm very disappointed by him.
I don't blame him to hide his private life...but to tell something wrong to a fan who has respect for him.

For the "holding hands", i don't care, you know they live together and i'm sure he's sweet with her when there's no camera lol.
But one thing i care is that he still drinks (when i saw the London video) and i thought she would be a good help for him for this addiction but...it's not the case. I know he's an adult and so he does what he wants but...there's a difference between to live it uf and to be drunk like he was in London. So sad...; March 8, 2009 at 4:19 AM

They enjoy each others company.
In regards to her helping him with his drinking, i so agree, sadly, it doesn't look like she's doing that!
Even adults need help, especially when they have been in trouble like our dude!You're right, it's very sad!
