"REAL" MOLSON BEER, THE CAST OF 24, LUC ROBITAILLE AND IT'S A PARTY L.A. is Vancouver's sister city so the Canadian Consulate here is hosting a huge shindig for Canada Day this Tuesday evening in Hancock Park with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics as the theme.
Molson is sending the beer -- the real stuff, not the watery American-made version, thank you very much -- and the Hudson Bay Company is providing the gift baskets. Mingling with the invited Canadian born guests -- hockey greats Luc Robitaille and Wayne Gretzky, 24 producer John Cassar and actors Kiefer Sutherland and Elisha Cuthbert; stars Rachel McAdams, Jim Carrey, Mike Meyers, Howie Mandel, Matthew Perry and Leslie Nielsen -- will be the official Olympic mascots, Quatchi, Sumi, Miga and Muk Muk.
A staffer at the consulate said many American businessmen and politicians, such as L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are also expected. The bi-country party is to encourage more cross-border economic trade. "We do have to constantly remind our friends to the south that Canada is NOT the 51st state," the staffer half-joked.
I'm betting one taste of real beer and that'll be a done deal.
PRIME TIME TV ads from Tourism Canada featuring 20-second "real footage" vignettes of tourists coming across seals while kayaking or watching glaciers melt into the ocean are proving to be mighty popular with the already heatstricken Los Angelenos. "I'm sold," said Kim Torres, a local executive recruiter with two teenagers who admits she's always wanted to go to Canada. But the refreshing, quirky ads made up her mind for this year. "No kidding, we're booked for end of July, a week in Montreal, then to Halifax and fishing off Cape Breton Island. I really, really hope it's 140 degrees while we're away."
